General discussion

PCI-E

Oct 20, 2004 5:19AM PDT

I intend to buy a Pci-express graphics card. My motherboad is very normal with 1 agp slot and 3 pci slots. Im just wondering before i spend alot of money, whether i need a new motherboard with some chip in it or whether my mobo now will 'run' the card properly altho there is nothing mentioned about PCI-E on my current mobo.

Thx in advance.

PCI Express 16 slot.

Even with the new mobo, the card will likely perform no better than the AGP equivalent even though they are very different architecture. PCI Express 16 equals AGP 8X now, Its the second generation stuff that will provide some payoff. The vendors simply need to get some people to buy the first generation stuff by getting them to think that they really have something special.

The AGP Socket and the PCI-16 socket are physically different and one will NOT plug into the other.

Paul,

Trying to keep up with computer components is confusing so don't feel like the Lone Ranger.

I know of one member that will drool over this board and I also thank you for posting it. I'll use this board for custom builds.

To your question ->

LAN card you will not need,
this is intergrated into the board.
Integrated Peripherals :
1. T.I. IEEE1394 controller
2. Marvell 8001 Gigabit Ethernet controller
3. C-Media 9880 audio codec

Expansion Slots
1. 1 x PCIe X 16 slot
2. 3 x PCIe X 1 slots
3. 2 x PCI slots

CPU: 2.8 to 3.6 Prescott ->
Northwood 3.4 & EX all at 800 fbs.

Plus a lot of other good features.

Does this help?

Paul,

The new board uses LGA 775 socket for CPU
this is not compatable with your Celeron.

And slow down, I do this between systems I am working on. I also am a slow typer and have to find related links to post to tech level of person I am responding to. No Harm No foul, just letting you know.

On your first two posts after mine....
PCI Slots ->
2 PCI slots for backwards compatable
3 PCIe slots for the new cards coming out
1 PCIe for video
The 1x/16x relates to data transfer

The CPU is sold seperate from the board. Unless it is a bundle package then expect is see a price in the range of $300.00 to $500.00 depending on chip.

Just like school read, read, read

Enjoy

You are wasting your money buyng a Pci express card if your Mobo doesnt have any PCI express slots.

You should Definately upgrade your Mobo if you are set on getting some Card that is PCI express.

The question would be, and this is based on your question, why are you set or planning to get a PCI express card for a mobo that doesn't support it?

There are plenty of Great top of the line AGP cards out there.

So I would either get an AGP, which it sounds like your current Mobo supports, or upgrade your mobo as well(and anything like Proc or memory to support the new Mobo)to support the card you plan to buy.
