pc wont boot up unless rested for half hour

May 30, 2007 6:09AM PDT

hi all,
built my pc from new 14 months ago and until now have had no problems.
a few days ago i had to reboot my pc after a windows update, after getting past the post test and windows logo with the blue running lines the pc dosent go any further and wont boot fully up.
i have to restart the pc then it goes to the screen thats says, start windows normaly, start windows from last known good configuratio, safe mode etc.
ive tried them all with no luck, if i switch the pc off in safe mode and leave it for half hour or more the pc boots up normaly and runs great.
ive tried system restore, defrag, ad-awre, spybot search and destroy, and a virus check but it still persist.
does anyone have any ideas what the problem is.
thanks in advance.

Sounds like a part is now heat sensitive.

Did you try it with the cover off?

Is the insides free from dust and lint?

Are the heatsinks "spot on"?

Since you built it yourself, how about getting more heatsink compound and refreshing those areas you used it last year?

there is a slight noise coming from the pc that sounds like a fan grindind.
there one on the top and bottom for ventilation i think its one of those
is there anyway to test the heatsink?
thanks

ANY FAN THAT GRINDS IS BAD.

Fans are cheap compared to the parts that will age due to the extra strain of higher temperature. Fix that?

As to the heatsink "test" I don't. I just pull them, add a small amount of compound and reseat them. Again, the only test is to inspect the mating surface. One machine the owner opted to not use the compound. "It worked fine..." they told me. In just months a dead CPU.
