PC will not start-up until I manually shutdown th restart

by darrenstuart / December 15, 2008 6:00 AM PST

On approx 4 out of 5 occasions my laptop will not start-up. When this happens I manually shut it down by holding down the power button, wait for 20 seconds or so then start again when it starts fine.

I like to have my CPU as idle as possible so keep processes to a minimum and diligently manage all start-up programs.

I use Norton's 360 and regularly wipe all temp files and scan for Registry issues with 'CCleaner' and update all programs regularly.

-3GB memory
-Office 2007

Thank you for your time.

That's not good.

A family friend had that issue with the 17 inch HP from the dv6000 and dv9000 series. HP shipped a box and they had it corrected inside the week.

Some insist on a fix short of letting HP fix it. So here it is -> They put in another motherboard.

Thanks for the good news...

Thanks Bob.

I've been putting up with this issue now for 6 months or so & considering the laptop's lifespan will probably persevere.

Having said that, I'll still approach HP & see what they come up with. If it's a 'generic' problem I'd expect a fast & 'generic' response.

Thanks again.

Laptop fails at Start-up

Hi Bob
After checking with a few local operators around here, I have since discovered it was simply a metter of resetting the battery!!!

All I had to do was remove the battery, start the machine on 240v, shut it down, re-insert the battery and it hasn't failed since.

I can't belive the difference and sure saves arguing with HP let alone downtime.

We tried that.

There is another well known reset. It didn't work in the cases so far.

Let's cover it so others will know.

1. Remove AC power and battery.
2. Press the Laptop power button and hold for 1 minute.
(Yes it's much less than that but I ran into too many that won't hold it for the right number of seconds so I've changed the instruction to one minute.)
3. Release the button, slide in the battery, apply the AC and wait one minute.
4. Try it again.
