PC will not recognize CD-RW

Feb 1, 2004 10:02PM PST

I had to detach my CD-RW drive recently in order to open it up and remove 2 discs that were stuck in it thanks to my little ones.

After reattaching it and rebooting my computer with Windows XP, the computer does not only not recognize that there is a CD-RW drive installed, but it does not even show the DVD-ROM drive that is installed (which I did not even touch when fixing the CD-RW drive problem).

Both drives do have power. I did a system restore to a point previous to when I did the servicing, but it did no good.

I have run the add hardware wizard, but the drives, manufacturers and models do not show up (LG and Pioneer). Both drives did not come with installation discs per say...they came with discs to install programs such as Nero. I have checked to see if driver downloads are available for these drives from the manufacturers' websites but there are none.

I am stumped. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

(NT) Do the units show up in the BIOS boot screen? If not, XP will never see them.

No, they do not show up in the BIOS.

What I do not understand is that I simply unplugged the 3 connections to the CD-RW drive when I had to open it up. When done, I reconnected the connectors as they were originally. I made no changes to any settings, in Windows or BIOS, nor did I change any jumper settings. Now, both CD and DVD drives are not being recognized by my computer...but at least they are powered.

The IDE cables are not bullet-proof.

Try a new cable.
