pc will not recognise USB Stick or External Drive

by downloadnickg / June 12, 2009 6:37 AM PDT

I run a Dell Dimension E521 with vista Home premium. I was prompted to update Vista with a service pack. Now computer will not acknowlege my Pretec 4Gig USB stick when I plug it in. Even more worring, it will not acknowlege the external hard drive I use for backing up. Have just pluged in partners USB stick and that was fine...??
What is going on??
How can I get it to work again??
All advice welcome.

Do your USB stick and external drive ...

still work in another PC? If your partners USB-stick works in the same USB-slot (that's important, use the same) as yours doesn't work, then we start to suspect your devices. Better check!

Front USB's are ....

not as good as back USB's. So it's more or less understandable that an external disk is recognized by the back USB, while not by the front USB. On another PC you might have better luck.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
