1050 Ti + 16GB Ram V 1060 + 4GB?
Mar 30, 2018 8:27AM PDT

What would see more of an improvement?
Also are you referring to the 3 or 6GB 1060? Thanks

As you know, the answer varies with the game.

Because of that my answer is "depends." But if you can swing the 1060, it is a step up from the 1050 Ti. As to RAM, another "depends." 4GB is slim but depending on the game might be fine if you have the usual SSD over a HDD.

Actually until we get to bleeding edge games, 8GB main memory is fine.

Yes, those are expensive.

Nobody needs it in a desktop. If they need to store a lot of data, they simply buy a large HDD and install it as second drive next to their SSD.

But it might be necessary for people who want to store a lot of data on a laptop if that doesn't accomodate 2 drives and if they don't want to carry an external hard disk with them.

Why do you need it?

Ssd

Only you know if you need that much storage.

Only you know if you need that speed.

Step it down a notch and look at a sshd.

Fit it into an enclosure and your looking at about 1/5 the cost.

Your first problem is it looks like your mobo only has 2 ram slots.

So 4x4GB is not going to work.

If you want to go to 16GB then shop for a 2x8GB kit.

Your next problem is the psu.

Tell what you have now......make and model.

PSU is the only thing I'm not sure of.

Haven't got round to taking the side off to look. I found 4x 4gb relatively cheap so am planning to use 2 sticks now then the other two when I buy a new mobo

It is a novatech branded Power Station v2 350W
Model no. FSP350-60HHC(85)
It is a family prebuilt desktop that was handed to me. I plan to upgrade everything in the system at some point just want to know what would be the most effective/ best use of money to improve performance for the first upgrade.

Problems
Mar 31, 2018 8:12PM PDT

If you replace the mobo you will probably need to buy a new OS.

If you replace the mobo it might not take that type ram.

Since you have 4GB now you can try fitting the mobo with 2x4GB.

Your psu is a dual rail type so it will be iffy if it can power a 1050ti.

Your call.

Ram and os should be fine

I have a Windows 10 boot drive so the os isn't a problem also I am planning on sticking with the lga 1150 Socket which will take the ddr3 ram. So the PSU may need to be one of the first upgrades?

Test the gpu with what you have.

If there are problems then shop for a psu.

Having the Windows install disk means nothing.

It's the activation code.....it's locked to the old mobo.

Change that mobo and I suspect you will be buying a new license.
