pc unable to locate scanner

Dec 22, 2003 9:00AM PST

I had a problem with a spyware on my computer and I tried to delete the file, in doing so I accidently deleted a file I shouldn't have. So I used my recovery disk and I'm up and running again,(no more spyware) however, my scanner isn't working. It seems that the driver is missing or I think it is? I have looked in the "add device" under the cameras & scanners, but nothing is there for scanners only cameras. I get two different messages when trying to scan a copy. "failure to communicate with scanner. Be sure scanner is on and properly connect" and "you may have a scanner connected to your PC but the software was unable to locate it" I have a HP Scanject 3300C. The USB connections are ok. Im not sure what else I can look for or how I would get the driver for the scanner. I'm wondering maybe the connection at the scanner is the problem. Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks and Happy Holidays!!!

Dun,

Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information about your computer as possible. The operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM installed, brand name of the computer, and in your case, whether the scanner came with the computer. The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

I recommend unplugging the USB cable from the computer, uninstalling the scanner software from the Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs section, opening the "Scanners and Cameras" icon and making sure that the scanner is deleted from there as well, (it also needs to be removed from the "Device Manager/Imaging Devices" if listed there) then download the updated software from the link below. The HP site has the full scanner software, but you'll need to choose the appropriate operating system listed there: (Hopefully you have a broadband connection to the net because the software download is quite large.):

software & driver downloads
hp scanjet 3300c scanner

Read the installation instructions carefully, (because my next instructions may be wrong) but a normal installation requires the software to be installed first, then while the computer is ON and the scanner is ON, then plug the USB cable in. The scanner will be recognized and Windows will automatically install the correct drivers and software.

Hope this helps.

I'm sorry......
I tried unplugging the USB cable and following the instructions you indicated, but nothing and when I did go to the website you provided, it said, no supported scanjet product was detected. I've had the scanner for a couple of years and never had a problem with it until now........and I do have the software that came with scanner.
My operating system I'm using is Windows Me, I have a HP pavilion mx70, I have 192 Ram, I GHz. The scanner was purchased separtately.....
Thanks for your help

Dun, It's Not Clear....

...what you've done here. In my previous post, I suggested that you click on the link that I provided, then click on the appropriate operating system link (WinME), then download the 54 mg software installer. (The file is named: sj650en.exe and the download link is at the bottom of the page) Did you do that? It sounds like you clicked on the "Click here to HP automatically check to see if you need an update" and it reported that it couldn't find the scanner. Don't do that. You need to download the newest release of the software which will hopefully overwrite any corrupted files that were installed previously.

In addition, when you "used the "Recovery Disk", did you do a complete "reformat", then recover, or did you do an "over the top" type of recovery that reinstalls program files?

Was the scanner an "add-on" after you purchased the computer, or is the scanner software included in the "Recovery disk"?

Hope this helps and let us know.
