Question

PC turns on when I close the lid on my laptop

Oct 3, 2018 12:00PM PDT

I have a PC and a laptop, both in Windows 10 and both connected to the same internet connection; the PC is wired (from the router) and the laptop simply uses Wi-Fi.

Almost every time I close the lid of my laptop my PC turns on, and I have no idea what's going on or how to stop it.

I suspect that it has something to do with having created a home group a while back to share some folders, but I deleted this group and it's still happening. The laptop seems to be sending a "magic packet" to turn the PC on, but why? How do I stop it? I still want to be able to turn my PC on remotely, but not when I close the lid of my laptop!

I honestly don't know what to do figure this out, and haven't been able to find useful information online, so any help from you guys will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
A check on the power settings regarding the Lid.
Oct 4, 2018 7:59AM PDT

1. Go to Control Panel->Power Options.
2. Click on change plan settings.
3. Click on advanced plan settings below (if you are a standard user it may ask for the admin password).
4. Click on Power button and lid option. You will see Lid close option. Check the status on both battery and plugged in, they should both be on shutdown.

Option set to suspend. Could there be another solution?
Oct 4, 2018 8:08AM PDT

Thank you for your answer, Cyclops1983.

The lid close option is set to suspend on both battery and plugged in. Could that be what's causing my PC to wake up when I close the lid? I'd rather not have my laptop shutdown when I close it, I use several times a day.

Is there no other reason as to why my laptop is sending a wake up packet to the network when I close it? Maybe removing the connection between both computers (PC and laptop) can do the trick? I don't know if I'm making any sense, but I would really like to avoid having to shutdown my laptop every time I close the lid!

Thanks in advance.

Seems to be a Home group issue
Oct 5, 2018 9:21AM PDT

It does seem to be an issue with the Home group wherein the Laptop is the host and the PC is the Guest. I will do a few checkups on this and revert. In terms of the Lid, by default all devices shut down when the Lid is closed since the default Windows Power plan is being used but there are options not to do so if you change the existing Windows Power plan or use a Power plan of your own.

Home Group was recently removed.

No updates availableç
Oct 5, 2018 10:00AM PDT

I have wondered about this as well. My laptop does not seem to have any Windows update pending, but one of the recent updates in my PC did removed Home Group and brought with it a few new features. Maybe different versions of Windows?

My laptop has Windows 10 pro, whereas my PC is in Windows home (I'm not completely sure about the latter, I can confirm later today).

Check up details request

Would you mind elaborating a bit about those check ups? What do you recommend I do?

I've already removed the Home Group in my laptop (My PC does not have a Home Group anymore. I'm not sure why my laptop still does, as there are no updates available).

Possibly mechanical issue
Oct 5, 2018 4:32PM PDT

My guess is the device (switch or sensor) that detects the lid closure is broke. Have you dropped the machine? How exactly this is happening I do not know. The only solution I can think of would be to take the machine apart and disable the switch.

Never been dropped. Almost brand new
Oct 5, 2018 4:35PM PDT

I've never dropped it, the laptop is brand new. But please note that my problem is that a PC (a different computer, but connected to the same network) wakes up from hibernation when I close the lid of my laptop.

On my laptop, it's set to hibernate. Works fine. Can you try that?

Wouldn't help

Thank you Kees_B. But the thing is that it doesn't matter what option I have for what happens after I close the lid, my laptot still "instructs" my PC to turn on.
