Question

PC turns itself on

Aug 10, 2016 5:47AM PDT

Win 8.1 with Classic Shell installed.

When I click on Shut Down and again on Shut Down, the computer restarts by itself a few hours later. At the time of shutdown, it exhibits all the signs of truly being off, including the power light turning off.

Some time back, I researched the matter and discovered that unless an obscure option (at this point, I have no idea what it was) is turned off, the machine is almost powered off, but in actuality, is left slightly "conscious" and can be reawakened by the router. I turned that option off and thought that the problem had been solved. However, it happened again.

Short of pulling the plug, how do I turn off the computer and keep it off?

That worked

Only the mouse and keyboard can wake the computer.

Oddly, powercfg -lastwake received a reply of Wake History Count - 0.

Disable the mouse and keyboard wake function.

Can't do that

How will I wake the computer when it goes into normal sleep mode?

At any rate, when the computer's off, the mouse and keyboard aren't being touched, so they're not what's turning the computer on.

I still don't understand how a machine that's been shut down can be woken. See my last post to Bob Proffitt - it's the last post before your first one.

Here I tap the power button.

Since I'm never sure about the machine condition (I work in an office on many PCs) I wake them with a power button tap.

Oh so your also using sleep mode.

How about doing this one device at a time
One device enabled the other disabled.
If no help flip them around.

Waking a machine when it is powered off?
That's because off is not off....you still have this thing called standby power.

Off is supposed to be off

You still have standby power enabled.

That's how a scheduled task can wake a machine that's powered off.

That's how you can wake a machine that's powered off via the lan.

There may be more ways to wake a powered off machine.

Shut down your machine and take the side panel off.
Look at the mobo there is a good chance your going to see a little light glowing....that's standby power.

Will do

I plan to turn off my computer for a day tom'w. night. I'll check the mobo. And this will be a test of whether turning off wake timers helped.

(Probably) solved
Aug 14, 2016 2:02PM PDT

I posted the following above to Bob Proffitt, who suggested that wake timers might be the cause, but I'm repeating it here in case you don't see it.

The computer was off for close to 2 days and never turned on. The only reason I placed "Probably" in the subject is because when I turned off that obscure option a while back, it worked the first time or two that I turned off the machine and then didn't. So I'm going to keep an eye on this over the next few weeks and then - hopefully - add a final post to this thread.

Thank you for your help and time, Bob.

I can explain that.

My problem may be a little different - it's not a sleeping or hibernating computer that wakes up because the mouse moved. I do a Shut Down ..

it a bios glitch. hitting the keyboard or moving the mouse wil lturn the system back on. happened to me and my asus sabertooth.
start with flashing the bios to the newest rev. then saving the bios to factory settings then boot into windows. then shut down and turn off the power supply. then drain the mb and clear the cmos. if the newest bios flash took you should be fine.

Not the BIOS

The computer's in an isolated area away from human traffic when it's off. The keyboard's not being hit and the mouse isn't being moved.

Thanks for your reply.

I'd rather just pull out the plug.

I do appreciate your taking the time to offer a suggestion.
