PC to AV Receiver question

Dec 4, 2005 8:23AM PST

Hi,

I'm trying to hook up my HP PC to my Denon AV486 receiver so I can listen to music downloaded with Yahoo Music. I tried a straight Y connection, but the volume is low using this connection. The sound card in the PC is the standard onboard card that comes with the HP, Realtek AC 97, and I suspect it is the culprit. Just to see how it would work, I tried to connect the PC through the Pyle Phono preamp that I bought to hook up my turntable and this did boost the sound.

My question is, will hooking the PC up through a preamp like this harm any of my equipment, and is it a suitable way to hook up the PC to the receiver? The sound seems to be good and it seems my alternative would be to get a more expensive sound card (another preamp would run me only $14 at Amazon), so I'm tempted to just go this route.

Anyone see any issues going this way?

Thanks,

Mark Stafforini

Ok, Line output of the PC (blue 3.5mm jack) using a 3.5mm to RCA pin plugh cable to an AUX input of the reciver. This should work OK! What are you sound card settings? Most players have volume settings this will affect the lever sent to the reciver.
The Pyle Phono preamp has RIAA equlazation and should only be used for playing records, won't harme anything but the sound would be heavy bass and no highs. John

Thanks John,
That did it. I had it plugged into the headphone line, don't know why. Obviously, volume is set lower for headphones.

Works great now.
