Question

PC Thunderbolt Help

Feb 17, 2020 7:10PM PST

Hey all..
I’m dumb and just bought an Apollo Twin for music production assuming I could just use a simple usb to thunderbolt converter to work with my current PC...

Upon further investigation it seems I’d need an Asus expansion PCI card to enable thunderbolt 3, along with a thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter, and thunderbolt 2 cables..

After more research my current motherboard “ASUS P8Z77-V LK” isn’t compatible with the ASUS PCI thunderbolt card according to their website.

My question is, would this card work with I plugged it in to the PCIe.3.0 on the motherboard?

If not.. which motherboards are there on Amazon are the best bang for the buck?

I’m currently looking at the Gigabyte Z390 Designare as an option, and debating on doing a complete rebuild Bc I’m in need of an upgrade anyways.(if I do a rebuild I’ll probably just purchase everything new minus a hard drive and graphics card, being this build will be for mostly music production for the time being)

If I were to get the Gigabyte Z390 Designare, my understanding is that all I’d need is a TB 2 to TB 3 adapter with TB 2 cables. Is this correct?

Thanks I’m advance!

Answer
Frankly I'd try the card in the PCIe slots first.

https://www.uaudio.com/audio-interfaces/apollo-twin-mkii.html notes this does not stress your CPU so it should not be stressing the I/O as well.

There's a support link at the bottom to ask more from this maker.

As to the Gigabyte question this device is too rare. Best to hit more forums as well as the maker and Gigabyte BUT you betcha I'd be plugging in the card and trying that out.

Thanks I’m thinking about just trying the PCI TB card, I still need to purchase one. I guess if it doesn’t work I can always just send it back
