Pc sudden shutdown

Aug 7, 2016 11:49AM PDT

My pc seems to have a problem. It boots into uefi bios interface and has no problem. It boots onto windows install memory stick and installs with no problem, but after it reboots, it tries to boot to continue the installation, but it shuts itself down during the boot and restarts after 1 or 2 seconds. If i leave it in bios or the windows install memory stick for a good amount of time it doesn't have any problem.
What could it be?
PC specs:
Intel pentium g3260
Msi h81m-e33 motherboard
Msi gt730 v2 graphics card
2×4GB hyperx savage ddr3 cl9 1600mhz ram
And a 11 years old 410w chieftec psu.
Please help me, i will apreciate it!

That PSU is pretty old.

For now try it without anything you can do without. That is, from the list try it with a single stick of memory.

Also, no video card. The g3260 has onboard video so use the onboard video for now.

The 730 hasn't been manufactured for years so it's also on the suspect list.

I tried the same thing with graphics card removed and still sudden shutdown.

Just to be clear

If you boot the windows stick and try to install the OS it fails.

If you boot the windows stick and let it sit there for some period of time and then try to install the OS it works.

Are both of the above true?

Well...

1. Boots into windows install media
2. Installs windows.
3. First reboot occurs(like any other windows installation)
4. Tries to boot off the hdd to continue the installation
5. Shuts itself down in the middle of the boot at no 4

To be clear, the install doesn't fail wether i leave it on for a while or not. The problem insists on this sudden shut down at the 5th stage. What i meant to say at the first post was that it doesn't shut down when it stays idle in bios or windows install media.

Tell more.

Pulling the GPU should have freed up a lot of Watts but you still have this and other possible issues.

If this was in the shop we'd use a shop PSU to test. If that fails I usually head straight to the CPU heatsink to re-do the compound and mounting, then test if the fan works on it.

There was a machine not long ago the owner had not replaced the North Bridge chip heat sink. That took a little inside knowledge about PCs to spot the problem.

It might be the cpu cooler.

It was mounted properly, it's fan is working and the cooler has the preapplied thermal compound. The cooler is the stock intel one, and at idle(i have seen in bios) the cpu runs at 57°C.
I will try a deepcool thermal compound i have bought some months ago just in case, but i will try it much later because i am away right now.

57C seems on the high side for it doing nothing.

There could be a lot of other reasons such as an outdated BIOS or a cracked OS. But you can check those items at your leisure.

But the parts(w/o psu or hdd) are new
Aug 9, 2016 3:35AM PDT

I just bought them. There is no way to have an outdated bios! And the os iso that i made bootable on my memory stick was not modified or anything. It was an untouched copy of windows.

I think you are heading to a repair counter.

Old parts are nice but here they may be creating issues. As to the OS, try it from the untouched media without MODIFYING it to USB.

I've seen folk resist re-doing the heatsink and they end up at the counter where we'll do it for them.

I can't find what this untouched copy of Windows is. Just last month someone said that and it was from a Dell.

When your replacing the thermal paste look close at the top of the heat sink where the fan sits.

The last time I cleaned this machine the top of the heat sink was loaded with crud.

The only way to clean it was to remove the fan.

Since the fan was held on with plastic tabs it was hold your breath and pray.

But
Aug 9, 2016 3:33AM PDT

The cooler is brand-new! I bought the cpu from the store on july 27th and i barely used it. I just finished building the pc and wanted to install an os and this happens.

Test time
Aug 9, 2016 7:14AM PDT

Redo the thermal paste..test
Use one stick of ram...test
Go to the hdd maker's site and look for a bootable drive fitness test.
Grab a copy of memtest86...let it fly for 4+ hrs.

Crossing stuff off the check list.

Good timing

Today i am coming home and i will test these things. I also managed to get a 450w psu from 2013, but has a 20-pin connector instead of 24. Will there be problems with this?

SOLVED!
Aug 10, 2016 6:25AM PDT

It was from the power supply! I replaced it with a 450w one from 2013 and it works now! I will replace anyways the thermal compound from the cpu cooler because at idle it runs at 44°C
