PC Sometimes Lags

by VeganMan / December 26, 2007 10:53 PM PST

I have a Window Xp home PC not a laptop. It's a few years old, the last few months sometime I will type in a command the PC will not do anything untill 5 to 20 sec. Sometimes what you type want type out on the screen until after that 5 to 20 sec. I have dsl roadrunner lite which is fast usually it is instant as far as reconizing a command. Rebooting does not help. Once I did a extra scan with norton antivirus and everyting was cleared up for a day. Is there a maintinace program I can put through my PC or do I need to try something else.

Thanks, Joe

There are many different configurations. With such a small nugget to work with I'm sticking with my first answer.

There's an analogy to get help with your car. If you told me your car was slow, I would ask similar questions. Your second reply told me just a little more than it's a Ford F150 but there are some hundred different models and then some number of years.

I don't enjoy asking more than a few times in answer to your question.

On your part, you could just add the missing details so the discussion and really begin.

check what programs you may have running at the time in the background such as disk utilities, download programs, updates coming in for antivirus, etc. You really need to give more info on circumstances of when it's occurring.

If your PC is lagging you should do the following:

Make sure you scan your computer for viruses, trojans, spyware and adware. These may slow your PC down a lot. If you do not have virus protection, spyware scanner you may want to think about investing some money into these programs. Any anti-virus is good only if you know how to use the program. If you need spyware protection download Spybot Search & Destroy and download Windows Defender.

Also get rid of programs and programs running in the background that you do not need. Run a disk-cleanup and run a program called Ccleaner which can be downloaded at also run a defrag of your C drive.

Clean inside your PC, get rid of all the dust build-up inside your PC.
Upgrade the ram as well today you should haqve about 768mb-1 gigabyte of ram installed on your PC.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
