Question

PC sleep will cause shutdown and won't start for hours

Oct 17, 2018 11:27AM PDT

Hi,

I have build a PC about 3 years ago. I had no problems like ever. PC sleep and other things.

Recently, whenever PC goes to sleep and if I press power button it would do nothing and just switch off. Whenever it happens I can't even start computer for hours. Usually, after 12 hours it works like a it never happened.

Same happens on Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04.

PC speed is fine, no other random outages, I have even checked manually with multi-meter power supply leads and it seem to have a normal power output.

What is weird why the PC won't start for hours and when I say it won't start then even power light or fans won't come up, power supply is not active.
I have even disconnected from mains and pushed power button to o a complete power reset, changed power lead etc. it's all the same?!

Anyone has any ideas?

Clarification Request
Things to check, maybe

Do you have an LED on the MB that stays lit when the PC is powered down? These usually indicate the presence of the 5v needed to start the computer. If no LED, the 5v isn't there or is too low. A DVM would help. If you know the 5v is present, you can try to force the PS to latch by shorting the green wire on the MB plug to ground. This should immediately bring up the PS and you'd disconnect the ground when this happens. If this does not start the PC, another voltage may be the issue. Your symptoms sound like classic bad caps but your rig seems too new to think that right away. Now, if pressing the start switch causes the fans to twitch but stop almost immediately, the PS has tried to start but detected a load problem. In these cases, my experience has usually been that the PS was inadequate for the job. You could try disconnecting unnecessary hardware to see if the PC starts and, if it does, the PS is too weak to handle the load. Good luck.

So it could be motherboard or PSU bad caps?
Oct 17, 2018 12:14PM PDT

Hi,

unfortunately I don't have any special led on motherboard and no fans spins at any time during "dead" period.

I will see if I can force it rise from death. I think caps sounds like very plausible as it kinda reset itself after period of time, just weird that it ever only happens on sleep. I mean when I game I push it to the limit and no problem.

So just to clarify, you meant motherboard caps? or PSU caps?

P.S. PSU is 550W and maximum power "measured draw" is like 300W so psu is definately up to task unless something else gone wrong with it but power suplied on each wire is correct,

As to BAD CAPS.

You can find all about that with google and "BAD CAPS."

As to the 300W on a 550W PSU, not so fast. I have run into split rail models that do this so the real test is a shop or new PSU single rail PSU to see if it's the PSU.

Usually motherboard or PSU.

PSU tested as good
Oct 17, 2018 12:04PM PDT

Well, if you have read I said that I have disconnected and reconnected power from the mains and yes I have pressed power button of power supply itself. And when pc goes dead it stays until holy 12 hours has passed absolutely no signs of life.. no fans no lights no post nothing..

I can tell that is passes the power on as if I plug pc headphones it lights up. so the power is coming and PSU was manually tested each wire and it's perfect results.

PSU internal test

Hi,

I hope, I didn't seem rude. I am just typing nervous on my old dusty laptop Grin.

I will check visually once cover removed to see if there is any signs of failure.

Here's the PSU test we use at the office.

We put in a new or shop PSU to see if the problem goes away. Your method isn't so sure.

It's exactly as described in a link...
Oct 18, 2018 10:43AM PDT

hahah, you know it's exactly as it's described in the link that you have to do "power supply on/off button" trick was I had to wait between switching on/off like few minutes and it then worked!

P.S. windows have black screen and only Ubuntu can still load up but as soon as I press power button on the case it's dead until I do that "power supply on/off button" trick.

I am contacting my seller to see what the RMA procedure is.

Thank you both for helping me out! I am forever grateful for sharing your wisdom!
