PC Lockup

Apr 18, 2009 8:32AM PDT

I?ve not knowingly made any changes to my setup recently other than accept the regular MS & AV updates, nor have I installed any new hardware. But I have in the last couple of days, come across a problem that I?ve never had before.
After working on my PC, and then just leaving it on for a few minutes, without touching the keyboard or mouse it freezes up completely, even the clock in the taskbar and side bar stops. The mouse won?t move and Ctrl-Alt-Delete does nothing. The only way to free it is by pressing the reset button or disconnecting the power lead.
Does anybody out there know where I should begin to look for the cause and for a solution?
The length of time of inactivity before it freezes can vary from 3 minutes to over an hour.
Running Vista Ultimate SP1, AMD 64 3800+ 2.4Ghz, 4Mb ram.
Many thanks

PS Hope this is in the correct forum. Feel free to move it if not.

Doesn't sound like an OS issue to me.

The Athlon 64 3700+ I have is approaching 4 years old if not more. Sadly I'm encountering more folk that feel the lockups are OS or caused by MS. The lockup you have written about sounds like the usual machine in need of repairs.

Kindda thought it

maybe something along those lines, though hoping it wasn't! Thanks Bob.It may not be quite that bad yet though, because since taking the side panel off the case, to investigate further, I've noticed the problem has not occured for 2 days now. So I'm thinking now, it may be an overheating problem.Does this sound reasonable?
Will run a few more tests over the rest of the week and see what happens.
Thanks again Bob for your help.

When removing the side panel fixes it.
