PC locking up / resetting by itself

I have a Compaq Presario running Win98 w/256mb ram that's about six years old. It's been locking up / blue screen crashing and sometimes doing a complete reset all on it's own. It finally got so bad I did a full restore. Two days later, same thing. I have F-Prot virus scanner and Sygate firewall installed so I'm assuming no bugs. Opened the chassis and cleaned the cooling fins this morning, thirty minutes later - shutdown! Is there a computer activity logging program that I can have running in the background to catch what is happening when the machine shuts off by itself? I don't need a keylogger - I'm the only one using the machine so I know what keys I'm pushing. One other thing, seems to happen most often when online - hard to say for sure because that's where I spend 95% of my pc time.

As stated

you will need to do some purchasing. Could be power supply, bad stick of ram, hard drive. At this point, even the Mobo. I would first say bad Power supply but without you posting errors "if any" it's hard to say. I would assume the BSOD. Anything?

I get the BSOD about 10% of the time. It locks up tight - C/A/D does nothing - 50% of the time and I end up pulling the plug because the power swith doesn't reset it either. The other 40% it just does a reset by itself. As 'old' as it is I can't justify swapping parts out randomly. If I can get a cheap power supply I might try that. Next time I get a fatal error I'll jot down and post the message.

Error

In reply to: PC locking up / resetting by itself

It's always good to take down the error but be warned, if it's the power supply and your fans quit working, if the pc is over heating you run risk of doing permanent damage, if not already. I suggest while running it, leave the cover off and see if your fans quit. This isn't the ONLY sign of a failing Power supply and they may not quit. You can pull out one stick of ram at a time and see how that effects the pc as well.
