Question

PC kind of shuts off, but not really

Oct 27, 2012 1:15PM PDT

HP Pavilion p6711f, windows 7 64 bit.

Here's the thing, it doesn't shut down on it's own, I don't think. The picture goes off and it's unresponsive, but the power light and HDD indicator light are still on. Like it goes to sleep, but won't wake up. That's the only way to describe it. No new programs, no internet porn, virus and malware scans are clean. Microsoft Security Suite btw. I do download a lot of music and movies and tv shows, I'll be honest here, piracy. Been doing it for years and never had this happen. Thoughts? It's just a pain in the butt. Oh, and to get the PC to come back on, I hold the power button down til it goes off, then I turn it back on.

Sounds like

Sounds like a warranty issue, and if the unit's out of warranty, probably time to be looking for a new laptop. Which is about as much help as you're going to get on these forums, as you mentioned that you are engaged in piracy. Something that is against the rules to discuss on this forum.

Way out of warranty, but thanks. And I wasn't discussing piracy, I was mentioning a relevant fact.

Well, it's either hardware or software.

To choose between those possibilities, do a system recovery back to factory conditions. If it's fine that it was some software thing. If it continues to happen, find a repair shop.

I really hate doing a factory reset. You lose everything. But I guess I have to. Thanks.

Answer
your PC was too hot

if you hold the power button till it goes off then after restarting, your PC turns back on, maybe your PC was operating for a very long time, half day or all day maybe, then it gets too hot. this means programs it was running also stop. it needs to restart or take rest. if you hold the power button, your PC shuts off then turns back on but you see your desktop with just a black skin, your PC's RAM is broken. in this case you need to change your RAM
