Question

PC Freezes/Reset EXCEPT when I'm in a Discord Call

Hello everyone. This is my first post and I'm eager to find someone who can help me with my problem.

I built my own PC for work and low profile gaming purposes, (I will list the specs bellow). Since then it has this annoying problem that I've never heard or read before, anywhere. Let me know if my explanation makes sense.

I turn on the computer, I get the Gygabyte boot screen, Windows 7 logo pops on and then it disappears, the computer just restarted. The process starts again, Windows recovery screen pops up, I hit "Start Windows Normally". If the process doesn't repeat again, or if the Windows 7 loading logo doesn't freeze, I can finally enter Windows desktop, Normally by the second or third restart loop.

But not for long, if I happen to be doing anything, the PC will just freeze or reset itself, this manner is unpredictable and not related to any action. Going back to the events listed above.

I will enlist the troubleshooting I had.

1. Updated Drivers
2. Checked RAM voltage on the Bios. All good.
3. Changed RAM sticks to another slot. All good.
4. Performed RAM test with Windows built-in tool.
4. Replaced Hard Drive. Not solved anything.
5. Performed a clean wipe of everything. Installed new Windows 7. Not Solved anything
6. Checked if it was just the display that freezed, instead of the system. Nope, it is the system.
7. Performed a Benchmark test. Told me everything was okay.

Finally, in the most stupidiest way possible, I found out that as long as I were in a Discord call, the computer wouldn't freeze or reset itself. I could work perfectly with no interruptions, not even a hang.

Of course this means that I can't work offline, and that, as soon as the reboot loop finishes I must log in into a Discord server I made to stop this problem from happening.

I'm really desperate. Can anyone help?

My Specs:

CPU: AMD FX-6300

GPU: GTX 750 TI OC

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P Socket AM3+

PSU: 500W-EVGA 80+ White Rated Power Supply

SDD: Kingston SUV400S37/120Gb

HDD: Toshiba DT01ACA100 1 TB, SATA III 6GB-s, 7200RPM, 3.5"

RAM: Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz CL9 DDR3

I run Windows 7 and graphic drivers on the SDD and use the HDD for storage.

Enter the BIOS

In reply to: PC Freezes/Reset EXCEPT when I'm in a Discord Call

go to it's temperature section, watch for 5 minutes or more and tell us the temp you see there for the CPU and if the Heatsink fan shows rpms to indicate it's working.

This is a typical AMD machine at the counter.

In reply to: PC Freezes/Reset EXCEPT when I'm in a Discord Call

You'd done most of what we do. I see no mention of current BIOS but this build usually works for a few years than goes south. The usual fix is new motherboard and if the PSU is subpar, old, we change that too.

new mobo is on the way

In reply to: This is a typical AMD machine at the counter.

Thanks for the super fast answer, yes, I just ordered a new Mobo hoping it will fix the problem.

Is there a way to confirm if is the PSU or the Mobo the one causing the problem? I'd hate to replace one thing to end up buying another.

You usually go over the machine first.

In reply to: new mobo is on the way

You didn't mention the BIOS again and I worry about when folk "update drivers." Drivers do not wear out. You can easily create bizarre issues with Microsoft driver update and other driver update tools. Go stock. Use what the makers supply.

And we can do a Speccy reading but that won't get the drivers back to when it worked.

The boot failure is why I suspect hardware. A web speccy might show something. Worth a look.

By go over I mean.

In reply to: You usually go over the machine first.

Inspect for the old bad caps issue, excessive dust buildup, heatsink on correctly, ask how long it's been in operation as heatsink compound dries and cracks. Check the BIOS is current. Go to the maker's issued drivers. DO NOT USE MICROSOFT DRIVER UPDATE OR DRIVER UPDATE APPS.

go to piriform and post a speccy

In reply to: PC Freezes/Reset EXCEPT when I'm in a Discord Call

That way we can take a look at it. Unlike Rob, I use AMD almost exclusively. Both Intel and AMD latest processors need the newest motherboards and current BIOS on them, but your processor should be working better than you describe, and it may not even be the CPU. It's a curious problem when it works with Discord and problems otherwise. Post that speccy.

and you cloned it?

In reply to: HDD can't be the problem

If so, and the problem transferred, then you need to use windows diskpart? program and fix the bootloader. Windows repair program may do that for you.

Basically, most of the failures seem related to some hardware problem that Service Pack 1 (and rollup?) detects. I see you are running Avast and I know others have had problems if they do installs of updates without turning that off for a while while the updates are installing. I suspect that may be problem you encountered with the failures.

You are also overclocked on CPU from standard 3500 Mhz to 3800 Mhz, so should dial that back. At least the RAM isn't overclocked. GPU is about 100Mhz overclocked.

The Kingston SSD has some odd values, but the first is usually for HDD, "fly high" which shouldn't even factor on an SSD. Just pointing them out.

Here's what I'd do first, see if solves problem. Disconnect all from the computer other than keyboard and mouse, including the LAN port or wifi device. Don't want outgoing internet calls when doing the update and you have a number of programs that will do that. Correct any over clocking by entering BIOS and choose the Default setting. Next is to disable the antivirus before reinstalling the SP1 package, which is when problems seem to appear. If that doesn't correct the problem, let us know.

Are you trying to install an english version of windows 10 over a spanish version? I know in past windows versions that didn't work, although one could install a language package later.

I see driver booster.

In reply to: PC Freezes/Reset EXCEPT when I'm in a Discord Call

Good way to break a working machine. Drivers do not wear out and only need updating for rare reasons.

1. Uninstall Driver Booster and reinstall the drivers from the maker for Chipset and Sound for starters.
With Driver Booster it can automatically replace a good driver with a broken one.

2. BIOS looks old. For now, just keep this in mind since item 1 is most likely why it's out of whack.
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-970A-UD3P-rev-2x#support-dl

3. Unplug that USB drive for now.

Very clean but item 1 would have me change that out. Install drivers I knew to work.

About the new bios.

In reply to: Gotcha, will report back after I installed new BIOS

I wrote to keep that in mind but didn't clearly call out that if the PC worked before it may not be the source of troubles. I have run into cases where the BIOS must be updated but mostly for Windows 10 machines.

Here my suspect is drivers. Driver Booster could easily create troubles as drivers are no longer what they were, when it worked.

The problem has always existed

In reply to: About the new bios.

Since day one, this build has had this problem. It has never worked "normal".

At this point, I already got used to it altough I know is not normal and could be potentially harmful for my HDD. Hardware problem much?

Apologize for dead silence

In reply to: PC Freezes/Reset EXCEPT when I'm in a Discord Call

So, I received a new mobo and performed the swap. Now everything works like a charm, not having any problems so far. Seems like, for whatever reason, that was the problem, I don't know if it was wether a bad driver, a corrupt bios, or simply a defective Mobo.

I choose an older chipset, a 760 ( GA-78LMT-USB3 ) Of course this means no OC for now but is not something that annoys me, in the future I may upgrade it.

Still, do you think the other Mobo has a chance of repair? It'll be cool to know if it can work well instead of right away getting another one.

Again, sorry for the dead silence, and thanks for any light you can bring into the subject

I've lost count of changing motherboards.

In reply to: Apologize for dead silence

Sometimes it's bum, sometimes I run into clients that will never update the bios for fear of well, just about anything.

Doesn't do any harm testing on another machine

In reply to: I've lost count of changing motherboards.

I've known people who say that only a hacker can temper with the bios.

Anyway, I think my next step should be changing the suspected bad Mobo in another machine, see how that goes and make conclusions. Will update here eventually.

Thank's R. Proffit. You're always very helpful.
