PC freezes while viewing flv video files in my video folder

by techfreak79 / October 1, 2009 12:26 PM PDT

I have a Gateway PC running Windwos XP SP3. For some reason, when I open my videos folder, as the images of flv files appear, my PC immediately freezes up whenever a certin file's image appears. What might be causing this and how could I remedy the situation? The files in question are youtube and collegehumor videos. If I open Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate which I use to convert files to different formats,(and search my videos folder using the program everything is fine. But if I just open my folder and try and play a video that way, as soon as the image loads of a certin file, I have to the cntrl, alt, delete thing and it takes several minutes for stuff to respond to the command and shut down. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is quite annoying.

A well known issue with Explorer. We hope some day Microsoft will fix that. But until then the choices are slim and grim. You either fix the file so Explore doesn't crash, find a CODEC (try and CODEC SNIPER) and hope that cures it or turn off the preview of such in that directory. Hint? Use the DETAILS view. NO ICONS!!!

Again, well known, discussed widely but you haven't heard about it yet so this should get you started.

And no, Microsoft has NOT issued a fix.

Try downloading and running, AVI CODEC PACK (free download) see if that does the trick, Bob is right MS hasn't done much to fix that issue. Good luck!
