PC does not connect or takes forever

Desktop PC w/XP Pro SP2, ASUS MB, Pentium 4
Cable Modem thru Netgear Router w/HP Pavilion Laptop also connected thru router. Panda Internet Security updated and scanned.

I am writing this on the Laptop since the PC is acting up. Just today the PC takes forever or does not connect to websites. Also, MS Word will not open.

I turned off PC, modem, and router this evening when wife and I went out to dinner. Came home and turned on modem, router, and PC. Problem still exists.

What to do or try.

wireless router setup as the Forum Sticky suggests?

Firmware is a big issue, since most routers sit in a warehouse and get out of date.

Since you didn't provide model numbers, it just basic.

I rebooted everything again overnight and move the network cable for the PC from input 1 to input 3 and it seems to be working a little faster.

Because, as I read the post, the laptop works fine and MS Word has troubles also.

So it's "something" on the desktop. I'd start with a system restore back to yesterday and see if that makes a difference.

good to have some more information
ping default gateway, look for ping statistics, what's the results?
try as well ping some website. Any errors coming up.
What is happened when you opening MS Word any errors?
