Question

PC connection to HMDI outlet for projector

Aug 28, 2015 11:17AM PDT

Help - I am a teacher at a new school and have no tech support.
I have Dell laptop connected to a docking station with an additional monitor. I need to connect to a projector that is mounted and I can only connect to it via HDMI - my desk is about 30 feet from outlet. What is the best way to get connected? VGA (via connector) or HDMI cable

Answer
If you can only connect to the projector via HDMI,

then HDMI must be the method you use.
HDMI will give the better quality picture.

That said, are you sure there is not a VGA connector on the projector?
If there is, then you could ditch the "additional monitor" and connect to the projector with a VGA cable.

What makes you say, "I can only connect to it via HDMI" ?

HDMI VS VGA

The projector is mounted on the ceiling and the only outlet is HDMI. If I can only use HDMI, I would like to not have the sound go thru the projector, I want to use a speaker system, I play a lot of videos etc.

Thanks!

the provided connect to the projector is VGA and your laptop only has an HDMI port on it for video?

Perhaps there is a slight disconnect with the terminology,

Let's take it in steps.

1. What INPUTS does the projector have to take the video?
2. What OUTPUTS does your laptop have to put out the video?
3. The Dell docking station has TWO video outputs on it. VGA and DVI, which one is going to the additional monitor?

You should be able to take the sound from the laptop Audio Output port and feed it into your speaker system. If the projector has a speaker in it, just mute it.

Projector connection

What INPUTS does the projector have to take the video? I CAN ONLY USE HDMI - ITS THE ONLY PORT AVAILABLE.
2. What OUTPUTS does your laptop have to put out the video? LAPTOP HAS HDMI
3. The Dell docking station has TWO video outputs on it. VGA and DVI, which one is going to the additional monitor? DVI

Does that make sense?

Thanks!

Yes, that makes sense,

and because is does, why is there any question about how you will connect the laptop to the projector?

HDMI to HDMI with the Audio going from the Audio out on the laptop to your speaker system

Thanks - I will stick with HDMI - I wasn't sure of which one was better, I was initially having trouble getting the HDMI cords I purchased to work. Turns out I had a bad coupler between two cords. It's about 30 feet from computer to HDMI port.

Thanks again!

At that distance, you probably need one of these
