PC-cillin internet security

Jul 24, 2007 8:13AM PDT

Hi! I just got a new computer with windows vista home premium and also have the pc-cillin internet security, which was recommended as it works with vista...my question, is about other compatible applications, if any, I would need to help protect against viruses, spyware etc...

I have not used an all-in-one security for a while, so not sure if I should also use spybot s&d, or cwshredder or avg-anti-spyware...

I previously used all free ones --avg anti-virus, avg anti-spyware, ad-aware, spysweeper, and ZoneAlarm for firewall...

I did some searching in the CNet forums, but maybe I'm missing them, so if this has been discussed, please send me that link and I can search there.

I just don't think that one product is going to "catch" everything (that was my assumption in the past and had some big problems). I also know that too many of the wrong things can interfere and cause problems as well.

So, any suggestions would be very much appreciated!
Danielle

Personal Choice...
Jul 24, 2007 8:34AM PDT

It's up to you which security program you choose but Trend Micro is as good as any other, especially while it's free. (If you don't like the PC-cillin, you can always revert to your previous favorites.) The "PC-cillin Internet Security" program includes antivirus, antispyware, a firewall, as a few other items.. As such, if you decide to use it, be sure to have only ONE of the above items running in realtime protection mode. (I always install only ONE antivirus and ONE firewall on a machine because of the conflicts that I've experienced when doing otherwise.) You can still install antispyware programs AS LONG AS they are not running in the background.. For example, installing "AVG Antispyware" and "Ad-Aware" as standalone scanners is a good idea when you want to seek a "second opinion" on a possible infection.

Hope this helps.

Yes, that helps! And...
Jul 24, 2007 11:09AM PDT

From reading previous posts on the subject, I gathered that you should only have one anti-virus and one firewall installed. They too also mentioned the real-time protection...how do I know what's realtime? or just "on demand" scanning?...is it as simple as if I have to open the program and select a scan, then that is not real time? and if I have the internet security installed, then those are all realtime--running in the background?

Is spyware blaster ok to be running with the whole pc-cillin internet software?

Also I know there has been posts about doing online scans once in a while as well...are most compatible with vista, too? (I will go and do some more research on the forums as well...I think there was one that mentioned programs that are compatible with vista, I just gotta find it again!)

Thanks!

Security options...

* A large portion of security software, including just about all internet security suites, include realtime, otherwise known as background or proactive, scanning. The product description should come right out and say it, but you can always ask here.

* Yes, spyware blaster is fine in combination with PC-Cillin.

* Most 2007 versions are compatible, but earlier releases are not. You can also check the forum sticky for a list of free solutions that work with Vista.

Hope this helps,
John

Thanks for the help! I feel a little anal and crazy getting things set up! Oh-thanks for that site...I know I have been clicking around so much that I lose a post that is relative to my original search! I also get easily distracted by some of the discussions going on!
I think that's where I originally started to look!...I will have to bookmark it or something for future reference! Thanks again!
Your time posting back is appreciated!

Help! Trend Micro not working
Sep 7, 2007 1:33AM PDT

I have the same virus software you have (Trend Micro PC-cillan Internet Security 2007, Vista compatible), and I'm trying to load it only my new HP dv6500 (custom built on HP's website, 200GB Hard Drive, 2 GB RAM, Core 2 Duo processor, etc.), which is running Vista Home Premium.

However, whenever the load menu appears and I clock "Install," it kicks back a message saying a fatal error in my Windows Operating System stopped setup and that I should restart the computer before trying again. Restarting it does nothing. Any ideas on what to do? I fear I may have to reload Vista, but HP didn't send me a disc for it... Is it possible to do without it??
