Question

PC can't detect drive from SATA to USB cable

Jul 12, 2017 5:12PM PDT

Hi,
I have a seagate 3,5'' HDD (31000524AS) and I want to change to a SSHD drive that I bought (ST1000DX002). Since my PC is a pre-built from DELL (XPS 8500), I can't really access the power supply so I don't think that I can add a cable for my new drive. I decided to buy a SATA to USB 3.0 cable to transfer the data from the old drive to the new one but the drive connected via SATA to USB cable is not detected in the BIOS or even in the drive section of computer management.
What could possible be wrong? How could I make this work?
Thank you,
Thomas Charland

How is the 3.5 inch drive powered?

USB doesn't have the juice.

It's not powered from anywhere else than the usb cable

Does that mean that I would need another power cable to plug in the drive that is connected via SATA to USB? Because this cable takes both the SATA port and the power port on the drive. How would that work?

Be sure you plug that enclosure that Robert suggested into a usb 3 port.

If you use an usb 2 port your looking at a multi hour task.

After you have this all done and tested you can use your old hdd and the enclosure as a backup device.
