Since Pinnacle doesn't seem to have anything to do with disk drives, I think it's just coincidence.

Things to check:
1. Device Manager. Any exclamation marks?
2. Does the BIOS see the drive?
3. Can you still boot from that drive?

DVD DRIVE

Yes, in the Device manager there is an exclamation sign. But the drive does not appear at C directory and the Pc doesn't recognize a CD or DVD

And what does that say if you click on it?

- Since the drive (if working) has another drive letter than c, it's understandable that it doesn't appear at the C directory.
- And maybe the PC does recognise the drive (did you try booting from it or from Linux?). When there's an error in Device Manager it's understandable that Windows doesn't see it.

By accident, I deleted the answer from the OP. It was this:

This is roughly the message that appears (a google transation since I am using Italian window of win 7)

Can not verify the digital signature of the required drivers for the device. It is possible that during a recent change of hardware or software has been installed a corrupted file with an incorrect signature or malware consists of unknown origin. (Code 52)

Re: drivers

I'd start with uninstalling Pinnacle to see if that returns the correct dfivers. If no luck, try a driver rollback from Device Manager. If still no luck, try System Restore back to when it worked.

The drivers for a DVD come with Windows. So if you reboot in Safe Mode, delete the drive in Device Manager, and reboot again Windows *should* reinstall it's own correct drivers. But you never now.

Anyway, it's not hopeless (yet).

I have uninstalled the Pinnacle 10 and now the CD drives are showing again in My Computer. Does it mean I can no more install the Pinnacle again?

So it seems something is incompatible between your PC and Pinnacle 10. Since the current version is 17 already, I'd try that. It's only USD 60 or so.

Basic fixes

Make sure power is OFF and reseat the CD drive's connection several times with care at both ends. Now, reboot and check results. You can can also follow Kees suggestions as well. It may seem Pinnacle fault but these things happen, just recall what you did. if for the lack of anything, de-install Pinnacle and see if that helps at least you got that out of the way. if the problems remains after the de-install, then consider the CD drive is belly-up, replace. Try what you will but any drive over 1yr. old and in constant usage will wear-out to include simple use after 2yrs., etc.. You can try a air blow out or simple cleaning, but drives do fail.

Keep checking...
Nov 15, 2013 12:34AM PST

Please follow what Robert has suggested. This would be an old issue if that's the case. Pinnacle 10 is an intensive editing pgm. and maybe trying to better control the media source(s) and has a conflict in the process. The red/yellow flags in the device mgr. offer an error code once you click on it, will suggest the possible fix to get. However, in older PCs or setups, that could be hard to resolve as some combos of devices, etc., just don't get along and you only find that out after the install. So, if you have any other special or needs other than typical PC usage, reconsider what should be present. Alas, Pinnacle has moved on as well, they offer the Studio version and that maybe more of what you need or results in the real fix if you're really using old s/w in newer PC, yada, yada. Please check the support website:

the support website may offer some clue to zero-in on a fix or what needs to be done.

Answer
This sounds like the old Upper and Lower filters issue.
Nov 14, 2013 1:47AM PST

But since they come and go with Pinnacle 10 it's a sure thing this old version is incompatible.

HOWEVER did you research Upper and Lower Filters DVD Drive on google and try that?

If I had the time I'd install 10, delete those entries, reboot and if the drive shows up in Explorer then I'd consider the old way of creating a Video DVD. THIS IS NOT A TUTORIAL. So if Pinnacle is like most video editors you can create an ISO file of the work then record that with your choice of media burners. I like IMGBURN.
