But today I don't connect to my printer and scanner with a wired connection. It's on the WiFi network.
Long ago I had a desktop and a laptop and did something like you. Later I consolidated to a better laptop.
I have a PC and a laptop - PC for personal use; the laptop for business.
I have them both in my office, each with 2 monitors, keyboard, and mice (and other accessories like speakers, scanner, etc).
Problem: To save desk space, I'd like to use the same accessories, regardless of base. I have a Dell laptop dock (example here: https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Port-Advanced-Replicator-Latitudes/dp/B00N9AHLBE) which connects to the work accessories, but I cannot simply plug in my PC and remove the laptop - there is nowhere to connect the PC to the dock. Is there another dock that works the same way but will allow me to connect laptop AND my PC? Preferably with a switch between machines - rather than having to connect/disconnect cables each time.
