Question

PC (All in one Acer) stayed on After Power Outage

Jan 22, 2020 2:49PM PST

Hi Guys!

So a few days ago, I had a severe thunderstorm where I lost power to my whole apartment for 2 days! Everything was not working. When the TV cut out and went black I pulled out the TV cable from the wall socket as well as the cable that's connected to the PC. The PC cable is connected to a power board surge protector which is then connected to the wall socket. So I pulled out the powerboard surge protector from the wall socket to protect the PC. At the time I pulled out the surge protector from the wall socket, I wasn't using the PC at all. During the 2 days with no electricity/Power, I couldn't use anything. When the power did come back on I reconnected the TV and powerboard surge protector back into the wall socket and as I did the PC just came back on as nothing had happened. All files and websites I was looking at were still on! The PC did not reset at all, the PC screen just came on. How is this possible, that a PC can operate with no power? It just doesn't make sense. Is there power coming from somewhere I don't know of. I have an All in One Acer Computer.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers for the help

Matt

If the machine had hibernated prior to power loss.

I can see how it would resume as you left it.

So, a PC in hibernation mode doesn't need power? And then when the power came back on, the PC just came back on as if nothing had changed?

That's it. The machine is fuily turned of, just as when it's shut down, but the current state is saved on the hard disk and re-activated after boot.

a BIOS setting
Jan 23, 2020 2:16PM PST

Almost all computers have a setting in the BIOS which can be toggled to allow a computer to restart after a power outage, especially important for those running a server at home, or have a home security system they want to become active soon as power is restored. The setting can also be where after a power outage the computer stays off. Yes, there's battery power in a laptop, and both some laptops, and all desktops have a CMOS battery (CR-2032)also which can keep the BIOS program itself active during such power outages.

It's Magic!

The computer god Bill Gates waved his magic wand to ensure your all-in-one PC would come back on right where you left off. Why, you ask? Because ACER is among the chosen; so, you made an excellent choice when you bought that ACER!
