I don't know whether or not Malthus would be on my list of things for ALL educated people to know, but surely you agree that there are concepts/events/people that should be a part of any well educated person's fund of knowledge? The list might vary from time to time or place to place or culture to culture but I cannot imagine anybody questioning the need for certain minimum breadth of knowledge.
I hardly think it is elitist to believe a well educated person should be educated about a wide variety of topics.

China's demand for oil jumped by an "astonishing" 28% in January compared with the same month a year earlier, the International Energy Agency (IEA) says.
The body added that demand for oil in 2010 would be underpinned by rising demand from emerging markets, with half of all growth coming from Asia.
But the IEA predicted demand in developed countries would fall by 0.3%.
