A patch cable may not be a crossover cable and you may need one of those!

If you connecting the 2 computers directly to each other make sure you are using a crossover cable, they usually come in yellow, typically 7ft long. the standard patch cable is wired for multiple computers to connect through a switch. For 2 computers directly connected you need to use a crossover cable. Also, you need to configure the TCP/IP settings for both computers lan (NIC) cards. Just assign 1 computer (win 9Cool as 192.168.0.1 for its IP address with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and the 2nd computer (win 2000) as 192.168.0.2 for its IP address and same subnet 255.255.255.0 Just for the Win 2000 computer you'll need to make sure you have the Enable Netbios TCP/IP radio button clicked to be able to share files between the 2 computers. been a while since I worked on win 98 but, you may have to do this for the win98 computer as well. Finally, you need to right click on the c: hard drive for both computers and click on the sharing option. enable sharing full read write privleges. Now you need to reboot both computers 1 time for them initialize the TCP/IP settings you configured. They should both be able to share files. Note win 2000 will share the program folders and the windows folders for security reasons.
