password protecting a network

hi,
I HAVE A WIRELESS MODEM AND I USE IT TO CONNECT BOTH MY LAPTOP AND DESKTOP TO THE INTERNET.HOW DO I PASSWORD PROTECT IT?BECAUSE MY NEIGHBOUR'S GET THE SIGNAL TOO AND I WANNA SECURE THE NETWORK.

It's called WPA . . .

You have to access the modem/built in router, and turn on WPA. You then set the PCs to the same code key you set in the modem/router. Since you gave no modem make, model, or OS this is as far as I can go.

okie.cool got it.
and one more thing,when i connect to the net using the laptop,my desktop switches on!!Do i have to change any option in BIOS settings?

Should be a setting like: turn on at LAN activity. Located near the 'turn on at a specified time' setting. Go and search.

there was no option-specific time in BIOS settings.Is it in the settings which can accessed by pressing DEL dusring startup or through my computer?

Yes, that's the BIOS.

And the BIOS is the only thing that can wake up the machine if it's turned off. No Windows active then.
