Password protect internet explorer

Mar 10, 2004 8:39AM PST

Is there a way to configure internet explorer that will prompt you for a password when clicking the IE icon so you can not get to the internet without it. I have some employees who need to have their access to the internet cut off.

The easiest thing to do, in my opinion, would be to password protect the screensaver in the "display properties" console. =0)

Even if there was such a way (removing the .exe file from their computer would surely do) they would simply type in the url (www.cnet.com) in the address bar in Windows explorer and go browsing.

Some possibilities:

- You can use Content Advisor or the hosts file on their computer to block individual sites or certain rated sites, however.
- A variant: search for "Parental Control" software and see if any exists that let you block everything.
- Remove the TCP-IP software from Config Panel, network. But that only makes sense if you don't use it for the LAN (use NETBUIE for the LAN, for example, or Novell).
- Configure your own proxy server in the network, and find proxy software that can refuse access to clients based on ip-address (if such software exists).

Hope this helps.

Kerwin,

It depends on the specific type of setup that your comany is running. Are these all separate computers, or one computer that everyone accesses? Are you using a "dial-up" connection or is it broadband?. Do you use a separate connection for each computer or do they connect through a central server? And what operating systems are you talking about here? Is each user required to log on to access Windows? If so, most filtering software can be used to restrict a particular users priviledges.

Either way, there is software which restricts internet access. Some of the "Parental Control" softwares will do it on individual computers. (NetNanny, Browse Control, or more commmercial types such as WebSense,Cyblock, etc.)(An example: http://www.spectorsoft.com/products/SpectorPro_Windows/screenshots/BlockInternet.html)I work for an agency of 8-10,000 computers and anyone who uses the internet must sign on with a password to access the net. A variety of internet gateway software is used.

Hope this helps.

You can also restrict user groups to the mshtml.dll in the system32 folder, which will prevent members of the restricted group from accessing the internet completely, but this isn't a password protection. You would have to log on as a different user to access the internet. An idea, but not ideal. I am looking into a solution and will post it here when it is found. I need password protection with access logging and will reply to this post when a solution is found.
