General discussion

Partitioned.??

Jan 30, 2010 4:33AM PST

Asked here while back, never got answer,so I'll try again.Got a Dell Vista Home Premium,2GB Ram,4 GB HD,the rest is about Standard. My problem:Had comp. for a few months, started acting up(several small things).Being it was under warranty, the store where I purchased it,came and got it to repair.(call it joe's).When I got it back, there were 2 accounts on it.1 called joe's,the other called Guest.I used the joe's,and could get in w/my old password.Couple months later,(few weeks ago),couldn't get into comp. using joe's anymore. So,I logged into comp. using the Guest partition(i guess it was partitioned). It worked as far as getting online,BUT,I could never since then, get back into joe's(my original).Couldn't get to my pics,videos,music,etc...Still can't get on comp. using original password on original partition(joe's now),but can still get online using Guest, but once again,NO access to original(joe's),where I have a ton of stuff.!!Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this LONG post.!!

Or tell WHY you couldn't login anymore. Just telling THAT you couldn't doesn't provide any information about what is wrong.

You might be interested to read 2 "best practices" for PC owners:
1. Have at least 2 (3 is better) accounts with administrator capabilities. It seems you only had one.
2. Backup all files you don't want to lose (even if 'a ton') to at least 1 other medium (like an external hard disk or a DVD-RW). It seems you didn't.

Don't know why could no longer login to joe's.Just started having to use Guest.U R right.Did only have one at the beginning.Lesson learned on that one.Didn't have the comp. long enough to start backing up.Always have in the past.NOT so much worried a lot about losing the files on joe's,just would like to know if there is anything I could possibly do to get back to joe's.If not,oh well, but I sure would like to know how if I could. Can't figure it out. Thanks for quick reply,Kees.

If you don't know WHY, you might be able to tell WHAT happens if you try. Does it say the account doesn't exist? Does it reject the password? Does it give a blue screen (if so, please tell the details)? Does it give an empty desktop? Does it logoff automatically? That's what I meant to ask, but in such a way that you didn't understand it.

Anyway, I think joe's will be able to give you your files back if you can't yourself.
The usual way: take the disk out, connect it to another PC via a USB2 to SATA/IDE cable, take ownership if necessary and copy the files to any safe place you like. Then put the disk in the PC again and fix the issue, even if this needs a clean install of the OS. It's up to you if you feel like doing it yourself or have it done by joe's or any other technically inclined person or shop you trust.

Thanks for your help,Kees. When I try to log in to joe's,it says:error, and won't allow it.Just like everything on Vista.Gonna take it to professional, and have Windows 7 installed, and start over with that.Just thought I would ask before doing that. Thanks again for your time, sir.Much appreciated.!!
