im using the windows xp install cd recovery console
one of the commands is fixmbr
Then I would suggest that the fastest fix would be to reload xp. Its alot of work I know but, probably the easiest solution. I would delete the c drive when you get to the partitioning and make a new raw partition, to make sure you have cleaned any bad sectors. If you will lose important data get linux knoppix live cd and boot it up. It is not an install, it is a system that runs from disk and it will allow you to access your c drive and retrieve what you need to disk. sorry I don't have another easier solution.
