partition of external HD unaccessable

Jul 17, 2005 2:40PM PDT

One partition of an external USB 2 HD, formatted NTFS, is unaccessable, it says it is corrupted and unreadable.
I tried run 'Chkdsk', but it says it is in read mode only as F parameter is not specified. I tried run 'Chkdsk/f.' but this cannot be found.
How to get access again?
Any free utility to help?

in the 'administrative tools', 'comp. management', 'disc management' I chose properties of the partition I could not open and there under tools I checked for errors, with repair checked. That did the trick.

Our external USB 2.0 drives could not be chkdsk'd until we we at XP SP2. No explanation from Microsoft why XP SP1 could not do chkdsk on the external USB 2 drives.
