Partition new hard drive??

Mar 15, 2004 5:21AM PST

I'm installing a new HD and am planing to create 3 partitions on the 160g drive. I have partition magic for this task, but I also have drive image (both are Power Quest programs) as I want to create a backup bootable image in one of the partitions. I've not used these programs before but the read me file for drive image says it has a limited partition ability. I'm asking should I let drive image create the partition or use partition magic first and use that one instead?

Please use FDISK first since it's not incompatible with Microsoft stuff.

http://fdisk.radified.com/ writes "FDISK's #1 strength is compatibility"

Are you saying the power quest programs are not compatable with windows?

I see, fdisk is better to use with a new HD. I should have checked the link before posting my previous reply. Thanks

After reading the link you posted, there seems to be a problem with fdisk creating partitions larger than 64GB. His fix is a download of a new fdisk from the website, but he keeps refering to WinME and the NTFS. I will be insalling Win98SE and the Fat32 file system on the primary partiton. I'd like to make one of the partitions 100GB. Will his fix work with my Win98SE boot disk?

No problem! FDISK will ask you, if you want to enable large disk support and, if your answer will be YES, it will create partition bigger than 100GB!

Your choice. The issue is cosmetic.

Even without the updated FDISK from Microsoft, I have created 120 GB and larger partitions. It's a display issue and if you know about it, you know to press on and finish the task. I've seen technicians and others stall on that one.
