Resolved Question

Parted Magic doesnt detect my HDD

Feb 23, 2016 6:30PM PST

Hey, my brother tried to install windows 7 and formatted the drive in the process. We had valuable information there so im trying to recover it. I tried mounting Parted Magic in a USB drive, and when i boot it doesnt detect my hard drive, only the USB drive. But if i go into the hardware detector app before the boot it does. Is there something i can do?
Thanks

Yes, if you want your data back, it's highly advisable to make a copy (clone) on another disk (equal size at least) and work on that. Let's hope the cloning program does recognise it.

A new disk is some USD 60. Second hand they might be somewhat cheaper. if you buy a new one you should be able to sell it for USD 40 after use. If your valuable information is less valuable than USD 20, don't do it but just continue using the Windows 7 that your brother made without the data you lost.

In the future, try to save you most valuable information in some free cloud storage (Dropbox, for example, is free up to 2 GB).

Best of luck,

Kees

Then it's a dangerous move.

I gave a link to many titles CNET forum members use so your choice to try recovery and possibly lose it all.

The price of looking at the drive is under 1 dollar today. I carry a LiveOS (puppy linux) on both CD and USB to boot from and look at blown drives. No learning Linux. Read

I can't tell what system you have or what country but a 500GB laptop HDD is now well under 50 bucks. I know folk can't pay that much but eventually something happens and a Windows machine must be factory reset.

-> In the future, try keeping copies of what you can't lose on places like DropBox or some 10 buck memory stick.
