Paperless coupons

Jun 20, 2010 11:08AM PDT

Molly was lamenting that we should have paperless coupons where we simply show the coupon on a device. One national implementation of this has been in place for years. Traffic conditions in many cities are sent over FM transmission and can be received by GPS units to aid in navigation. My Garmin Nuvi receives these and will calculate the fastest route factoring in current freeway speeds. To support this service, ads are also sent out. Often these are discount coupons to local restaurants and hotels. These can not be printed out, these can only be shown on the device.

Cebit exhibits work this way

Went to cebit computer expo in Sydney. Scanned the email I got from them on a machine. Worked perfectly.

I've had issues with this in the past...

First off, I think it's a SUPERB idea.

In the past, however, I've had some issues trying to substitute an image on my phone for the real thing...

I've tried bringing emailed coupons to places like Express or Pizzeria Uno, and they've always had to get a manager to validate them, lol (I get that it's a little non-traditional, but seriously?)

Also, I've tried using coupons with barcodes on my phone and that still hasn't worked for me before. I believe there are etickets that scan if you have an iphone, but when I tried it with my last smartphone, no dice.

It'd be awesome if you could do stuff like that. I don't even have a printer at home anymore, plus cutting down on the paper would be nice!

Paperless coupons

I have yet to try this, but I like coupons in this time of tight money. Is there a way to save multiple coupons, whereby we can scan to the particular coupon that we need when at the establishment?

Buy a white T-Shirt and a can of red spray paint. With masking tape, make a circle with the letters c|net in it and spray it. Remove tape. You now have c|net logo. Then, make bubble letters |3 () |_, and spray. You now have BOL (Buzz out loud).
