General discussion

Panther folder

Apr 4, 2011 8:28PM PDT

I have seen many threads on the net with different opinions about the Panther folder in Vista, so I still don't know if it can be safely deleted or not.
What is your opinion?

Thanks!

I see there is one in Windows 7 as well.

Personally I see no reason to remove mine. It doesn't take up that much hdd space on my system, (unlike what I have seen reported in other systems), so space is not an issue with me. And in fact with many hdd's in the 1TB range nowadays I don't see space being an issue anyway.

There are quite a few empty folders or folders that don't seem to have any purpose, in Windows OSes. I think we would be second guessing what Microsoft's intentions are with these apparently useless folders and files.

Mine is big...

Yes, I have noticed from what I have read in some threads that some Panther folders are very small. Mine is almost 2GB though. I only have 18GB left on my HD, and although it sounds like a lot, the free space keeps getting smaller and smaller in spite of cleaning up etc., so 2GB could come in handy one day... Happy
I was just checking what I don't need and saw that folder...
I guess I will have to put videos in a DVD in the near future to free up space...

In that case, try a test.

Make a new folder and call it whatever name you like, eg PantherOld. Copy the contents of the Panther folder to the new folder, (make sure you can see all hidden files, and all hidden 'System protected' files).

Delete the Windows\Panther folder and test for a couple of weeks. If there are no adverse effects, then likely there is no need to keep those files. However since this folder seems to relate to Vista installation, any effect may not become visible until some reinstall or repair install is needed, or something like scannow.sfc

Another alternative is to back the folder up to some other media, CD/DVD etc, then delete.

About your videos. Make sure you have a backup of those as well. With only one copy you run the risk of losing them.
