Panny TH-42PZ85U or LCD? Burn in on panny?

May 25, 2008 8:17AM PDT

I just purchased a Panny TH-42PZ85U but have not had it delivered yet. The main question I have seems to have a WIDE range in opinions which has to do with burn in and image retention. I have avoided Plasmas until this day because I play a lot of games. This TV will go in my bedroom so it won't see near as much gaming. I started getting Halo 2 burn in on my older Pioneer Elite 510 CRT I had so I sold it before it got to bad and I purchased a JVC LCOS 55" and overall I've liked it. Fast gaming and burn in free. In the bedroom I will eventually get another 360 to play games on so my son and I can play online together with 2 different TVs or someone else can play in the other room if I'm playing in the livingroom.
SO, on to my question. Do today's Plasma TVs, the Panny here as my main concern, have horrible burn in problems? Many people may say something about the 4:3 material but that is all but extinct for me. Primarily I'll be watching DVDs and movies with some videogames at times. With that in mind can some of you guys chime in with opinions? Is there a good alternative? When I started looking at LCDs that would give me complete peace of mind about gaming the price jumpes from $1000 to at least $1300 so you are talking 1/3 more and that is for a typical 60hz. I did see a Philips 42PFL7403D that seemed to have a pretty good picture, 1080p, 120hz, 4 HDMI at Sams. This is the only TV I've seen around the same price range with 120hz and it seems LOADED compared to the Panny I just paid for. Any thoughts are welcomed. Well, not any. Keep any rants to yourself. Happy

Panasonic

First and foremost, allow me to congratulate you on your plasma purchase. You made the right decision, and for the price, you picked out the best damn plasma there is.

Secondly, image retention affects all plasmas. The question is to what degree. Panasonics have significantly improved their resistance to image retention, running cooler and incorporating a pixel orbiter. I would put the 85-series Panasonic just below the Pioneer PDP-5080HD, which would qualify as the least-prone image retainer of any plasma. PROVIDED that you first properly break-in the plasma, there will be no issues. But for the first 200 hours, you should adjust the set to 'cinema' mode. This will eliminate the chance of early phosphor wear and increase panel life (so you get the 20yrs. you payed for).

I am presuming you are equipped with a power conditioner and/or a step-down transformer. If not, get one fast (www.monsterpower.com or www.richardgreyspowercompany.com). This is a life-saver if there ever was one. This will allow the set to give you the life and picture quality you payed for in the first place, unlocking it's true potential (when connected to the right sources).

No LCD will give a cleaner picture, as there is no response time with Plasma sets. Even with 120hz, there is considerable motion lag layered with processing artifacts (from the 120hjz processor), so the gaming experience on an LCD is nothing compared to that of a plasma. Plus, dark scenes will be more visible and detailed on the plasma, making Halo a lot easier (I can testify for that one). With a punchier contrast, the Panasonic will invigorate the senses in a way that no LCD can.

Enough Said, I suppose you get it now.

Thanks! Anyone else have thoughts?

Thanks a ton for your thoughts. It makes me feel a lot better about my purchase. I'm still a little weary due to me burning in Halo on my CRT that I had before but as I've said, this won't be my primary gaming TV so that makes it much of a non issue. Thanks again for taking the time to reply. I'll try to post up when I get it and check out the gaming on it. Happy

Other opinions?

Any other opinions on this just to clarify for anyone else? I see another topic on burn in on a Pioneer Elite.

Don't worry about it, but be smart

I currently have a Pioneer elite plasma, . .I game every day, X360, PS3 and Wii.. . . as long as you don't pause the picture and walk away, or if you game, take a break every hour or so if the game has an on screen HUD and run a movie channel for a few minutes, burn in won't be an issue, . just use your head. . . First thing you are going to notice is the depth that a plasma has as compared to a LCD, .it's night and day, especially for movies.. . then of coarse my favorite, gaming, . . man, the difference is staggering, ther are no jaggies, the color isn't so saturated that it looks fake and no motion blur.......Now, if you watch CNN all day or Bloomberg, where there is a ticker on screen all day, then you might want to go with LCD. . . I just saw the review they posted a couple days ago for the Panasonic 800 series with THX and I am VERY tempted, so hope everything works out for ya.

Thanks again for the replies. I'll be playing most of my games on the new Samsung LED based 750 series that I bought for the living room. As much as I game at times I just couldn't see taking the chance on the primary gaming TV. I game for 3 or 4 hours at a time and would be annoyed to hop off every other hour. Also, most of the games I play are FPS so they almost all have HUDs. My first experience with burn in was my Pioneer Elite CRT. Got burn in from Ghost Recon (where it showed the HUD and the bullets remaining). I replaced 2 bulbs which would have cost me $800 but the guy only made me pay for one and put the other on warranty. I got more cautious but then playing Halo 2 I started noticing that little round ring for your radar. One thing I wish gaming companies would do is put an option to have these things appear on different areas of the screen as you play or make them very transparent. Anyway, the LED DLP (can you really even call it DLP when it doesn't have the wheel?) I think I'm set and the plasma will be great for the bedroom. I'll try to post up my thoughts when I get them both hooked up.
