Question

Panasonic Viera 55 doesn't recognize external HDD

Sep 1, 2015 3:26AM PDT

I have a Panasonic Viera 55" which doesn't recognize my external HDD (Transcend Storejet 1TB) but do recognize 2 others (both 1TB one of Samsung and the other Western Digital). On the computer the HDD works perfectly. What could be the problem?

Re: disk

Three possible issues:
- Not enough power on the TV's USB. Solution: use an externally powered disk.
- Different type of partitioning, more than 1 partition on the disk, unsupported filesystem on a partition. Solution: partition the disk in a way that is supported by the TV.

Drive. Use right click properties for a start. Then imgur for us to see.

The StoreJet looks to be USB 3.0 which some TVs balk at. Are the others USB 2.0?

They are both NTFS.

I'd try another WD

There are reports of USB 3 drives that don't play along. You can try removing all partitions on the non-working drive, create a new NTFS volume, format and see if it works but these Smart TVs are not PCs.

so how can I now prior buying which HDD works?
Sep 3, 2015 7:02AM PDT

I've made a quick data wipe with Partition Wizard. Still doesn't work.
If you say it's something in the TV, how can I know which HDD works properly with the the specific TV that I need the HDD for.
My TV model is AS670 (55 Inch) and I read the manual but there is too little information nothing about the USB.

You may not have done what I asked.

I asked to remove partitions, you did a data wipe. I had a little hope that a clean start on the drive may help but you tried something else.

I think, in your case you need to buy drives that work. While it might be the issues I noted, maybe it's too much to ask to try it my way. Yes, it may not fix it but I like to try before I change drives.

I fixed the problem!

OK I figured out out!!
The problem was that I used a USB 2 extension cable that that one end was connected to the TV and the other end was connected to a cable that was connected to the Transcend HDD.
When I had changed to a USB 3 extension cable everything started to work properly.

In your top post, no mention of extension cables.

We know USB 3.0 drives alone can be trouble. Details matter but glad it was something easy.
