Panasonic TH-50PHD8UK VS Toshiba 50HPX95

by mattnotis / February 13, 2006 5:41 AM PST

Which is the better TV? Right now I'm debating between those two with the Pan. coming out ahead because it's significantly cheaper.

Same TV Different Clothing

Unless things have changed in the last year or so, Panasonic makes some or all of that Toshiba (Toshiba's were rebadged Panny's from what I have read).

As you know the 8UK is the commercial model of their consumer line. That 8UK is very similar to the Panny TH-50PX50U or 500U.

If you are OK with no speakers, stand and tuner then the 8UK is a great plasma and probably has a very similar picture quality with more picture tweakability.

Let me get this straight...

So, the Tosh. would be the economical choice since I need to buy speakers, a stand and a tuner? How much would all of that cost?

Now I'm Confused

Your original question seemed to imply that you had already done some research, since you mentioned the 8UK which is the commercial version of Panny plasmas and comes without tuner, speakers and stand.

Suggest you go to www.panasonic.com and check out their plasma lines in both consumer and industrial models.

To answer the question, the stand runs about $150-$200, the add-on speakers to the plasma about $475 and most people who buy that model use the tuner in a set-top box with their cable or satellite hook-up or an independent STB. Many of these people also just use the speakers from their 5.1 surround system connected to an A/V receiver.

Maybe you should be considering the consumer version of that Panny which can be either the TH-50PHD50U or TH-50PHD500U.

Upon further reading, I noticed the Tosh. had 2 HDMI inputs. Since I'll need one for my Denon 2910 and my cable, methinks this is the way to go.

With a picture quality which is probably very close on the two brands you are chooing based upon your specific needs. Sounds like the right plan.
