Panasonic PV-GS12 - Records audio at very low levels

Aug 7, 2007 1:11AM PDT

Hi:
I have recently noticed that after playback of my recent (2 days ago) vacation trip that my audio was next to nothing. I tried recording again and still has very low audio. I can play back tapes that have normal audio levels but eveything including and after this one tape is next to nothing as far as audio levels are concerned.I have checked the settings in record mode and all seem OK. Zoom Mic, wind cut, 16 bit verses 12 bit, cinema mode, I have tried all and every combination under the sun and still really low audio. Is there anything I have missed in the settings that can affect this feature? I even cleaned the heads with a headcleaner. Are there audio heads that can get dirty? Please let me know...it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Does it have an auto level control?

As long as the audio is recorded, the volume can be boosted in post by a computer. Sony Vegas, for example, can do this.

Is there a setting that allows you to

manually set the audio level? I know you said you checked some settings, but this was not one you identified...

Also, check whether your audio setting with dubbing is right... I think it is supposed to be on ST1 if there is no dubbing... Though since you can play other tapes this is likely not the culprit. And we know the volume level is not the culprit, either...

With the location of the mic right up front, is it possible there was something blocking it during the video capture? Just grasping, at this point...

I have checked the volume and that is the W/T adjustment doubling as a volume in playback. The setting is ST1 in playback menu. I can swap out with a older tape and it has ample volume. It is certainly record mode that is causing the the real low level of audio. Still don't know what else to check for.
