Question

Panasonic / Onkyo / Sky Q sound cut out

Sep 4, 2018 3:56PM PDT

Hi there,

After two years of seamless use I’m experiencing problems with my sound while watching Sky Q and built in tv apps (Netflix, Amazon, etc)

I have a Panasonic TX-40CX680B, Onkyo Amp and Sky Q. Sound is set to run through the arc input on hdmi 2.

Sometimes when sound cuts out I switch to tv speakers and it remains silent

One other interesting note is that sometimes non HD channels will work fine through the tv speakers but HD channels remain silent.

Nothing has changed in recent weeks to prompt this change and as mentioned everything was fine for 2 years so hard to pinpoint the issue.

If who has experienced similar problems and has any advice, I’d appreciate it.

Many thanks

Answer
Try fresh cables first.

There's a long discussion about LG and dropouts and many noted the HDMI cable. Nod to the AmazonBasics HDMI cables.

After that be sure you didn't move your HDMI connections. I've fielded such before and I moved the connections around and that was it.

Finally you have the old issue of HDMI passthrough of HD audio. Not a sure thing. Set all to PCM or stereo after you completed the cable and connection work.

Many devices auto update and get us in trouble.

I had tried a a replacement HDMI to no avail but I’ll try a brand new one. I’ve now set the output to PCM. Hoping that does the trick.

The Onkyo is pretty old (7 years) so doubt that updated itself. I think it’s probably something to do with the Sky Q satellite box or the television auto-updating and screwing with everything.

Maybe it’s time for a soundbar but I imagine I may run into the same problem as I would have to use arc to run the TV, PS4 and sat box through the speaker.

Thanks again. Much appreciate.
