Panasonic TZ5

I assume that it does not work and only displays the message.

I would first recharge the battery.

If the camera is off and in recording mode, the lens should extend when you turn-on the camera.
Observe as you turn the camera-on and see if the lens tries to extend.
If the camera has been dropped, the lens is probably jammed.
Not something you can fix yourself.

I suggest you phone Panasonic Service and ask them what the message is trying to tell you.

Panasonic TZ5 focus lens error Please turn camera off and on
Oct 30, 2009 5:27PM PDT

I have a Panasonic TZ5 with the same problem... "Please turn camera off and then turn on again". I skeptically read of people banging it a couple times, but tried it. Lo-and-behold, it actually did fix the problem! Turn on the camera and immediately after it finishes its zoom calibration, bang the bottom against a table (lightly!) while it's doing its focus hunt. On mine, after that step, it hunted unnsuccessfully for focus a little longer, but this time, stayed on with no message. I just had to cycle the power another time, snap some pics and play with the zoom a little and it finally re-caibrated itself. Prior to the above steps, it was still functional enough to allow me to do a firmware upgrade (http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/download/TZ4_5/index.html), but that did not resolve the problem.

Banging works to fix Lumix DMC-LS80

Fast hard tapping worked a treat on the LS80. Dont stop once the lens opens up and a picture is showing, keep going a few more seconds until its finished.
