Keep in mind that a 16:9 TV has a ratio of something like 177:1. It's n ot a perfect 185:1. Many movies have 235:1 and even a wider aspect ratio meant for Cinemascope (285:1 I think) and other theater formats, and these will leave you with black bars on the top and bottom of your 16:9 TV. Can't be helped. At least on your 16:9 TV the bars will be minimal, whereas watchng a 235:1 or a 285:1 movie on a 4:3 TV will give you a tiny strip of movie across the screen with huge black bars. Some DVDs say "Enhanced for 16:9 TVs" and these should give you a full picture.
What is the best way to view a DVD on the Panasonic Industrial model plasma? Even though the monitor is 16:9 aspect ratio many widescreen DVD's are filmed in even wider aspect ratios. The monitor offers 5 aspect views (normal, full, just, zoom and Panasonic Auto). All these views distort the picture except normal which gives you a 4:3 ratio and Panasonic Auto. The problem is that Panasonic Auto is only available if you are using the S-Video input to the monitor. Using the S-video output from my DVD player does not allow me to operate in progressive scan mode. If I use the component outputs I can operate in progressive mode but Panasonic Auto is not available on the monitor. My surround receiver operates in such a way that the input type must be the same as the output, meaning that if I use S-Video from the DVD player to the receiver, then I must use S-Video from the receiver to the monitor. Any advice on the best way to view these DVD's without distorting the picture? I do not mind have the letterbox bars above and below the picture but it does not seem that the monitor has the capability to retain the original aspect ratio.
