Question

Panasonic 50st 60 fickering

Jul 28, 2014 10:53AM PDT

Hey guys,
I got the panny st60 2 weeks ago, and i keep noticing flickering on it, on bright pictures. Is it normal? Will i get used to it? will it go away?
I can return it and get an LED instad, but i just love it's picture and colors. I just can stand the flickering.
Thanx for your help!

Remember you are repeating what others have found.

In specific, read http://www.avsforum.com/forum/167-plasma-flat-panel-displays/1205718-bright-area-flickering-partially-demystified.html but be aware that while the date is years ago, you're here with that same complaint. My thought is to drop the brightness level. And do control the light in the room so you can view it at its best performance.

If you are one of the minority who...

...notices this effect, I feel bad. The ST60 is probably the nicest plasma I have seen post-Kuro. Tried to find one last year but I was too late. My in-laws got one, and I decided on a non-smart F5300 Sammy. Although all plasmas are supposed to exhibit this phenomenon, I have heard reports that it's not as bad on the Samsungs. The hit you would take would be PQ, but not huge if you could spend more to test out an F8500. They are getting harder to find and the price is creeping up since Samsung is leaving the plasma business in November 2014 AFAIK. I'm not certain between periods of HDTV watching on the ST60 you would ever not notice it once you have started thinking about it subconsciously too Sad

It is flickering like hell, and I don't know if it's just the fact that i know it does or it's really my eyes, but I can't stand it.
I'm thinking of getting the S60 instad. Will it be the same??? or does it flicker less?? Will I loose lots of PQ? my room is dark and I dont really watch TV at dy time...
Thanx again for you help.

Sorry for not being 100% clear

With all plasma technology implemented on HDTVs, a very, very small minority are able to notice the flicker. Luckily, I am not one of those persons.

Count on the S60 to have a significantly poorer PQ than what you have on your ST60. Like I said, it's the best one on the market since the Pioneer Kuro craze (use google for more info).

See my previous post for referrals to one of the other (non-Panasonic) plasmas that might work for you in a dark space. I completely understand about what you are after to compliment your viewing needs, especially non-daytime Wink

If you have the $$, you could hedge on the future value of the ST60, since it is no longer produced and is super high quality for videophiles. IOW, buy either the F5300 or 8500 for less and wait a year to put your ST60 up for sale. It will likely sell for more than you paid, or close to that number. YMMV.

In that case

I'd exchange it. If the second flickers than this model is not for you.

Good point, actually

To the OP> Does anyone else notice this bad flickering? If so, then Bob is correct. Exchange it. Otherwise, if it is not noticed by the second or third person watching the same device, it is your eyes/brain that is the issue.

I guess Im one of the "unlucky" ones

I've noticed it on 4 different ST60 floor models as well. I have to say it doesn't appear always, but on bright picture usually, and not always. Maybe I can live with it, don't know...I've noticed it also on the GT50 floor model but MUCH less. and also on the S60, again, less then the ST60.
How bad is the S60 PQ? I can get the 60" in the price i paid for the 50st60. it looked good in the store.

Don't bother

With another Panny, you will still be noticing the ficker unfortunately. You need to switch brands to really have a chance in h*** to no longer notice this phenomenon.

Also bear in mind that any sort of imperfections or irregularities in PQ/image content are a lot more noticeable the larger the panel size gets Sad.
