Just revisit the doctor. He'll do a quick re-examination and then either tell you to be patient or prescribe something else.

Can't get help here...only advice

I agree with the other poster. Back to the doctor you go. Make sure he/she is a qualified MD. You probably need a throat culture done if it wasn't done already. Unfortunately this takes a little time to get results back but only by knowing the exact strain of bacteria (if it is bacterial such as strep) can it be targeted. Doctors tend to start you off with weak wide spectrum antibiotics first and escalate if necessary. This is proper as some risks are involved when you go right for the big guns. You might want to consider going to the ER if you have any big spikes in temperature...especially if accompanied by other such as febrile seizures.

You need a follow-up and report the results of the past treatment, etc.. Any further course of action is up to the Dr., so don't hesitate. Plus, did he/she mention the cause? You know they do get it wrong now and then. -----Willy Happy

Antibiotics are not prescribed for just viral infections, so you might have misunderstood that you have a viral infection.

Get back to the doctor NOW. There are serious conditions that may or may not have a high fever.

I went back today, and explaned to him about my throat, she just shined a light in it and looked and then perscribed me with antibiotics, and said it was a virus and it will take about 2-4 weeks to go away.

Thanks alot,

Any body rash? red tongue? If so, could be "scarlet fever" and runs through a variety of symptoms. Needs antibiotics.

I agree you need followup ...

I can't say from the description whether this is viral or bacterial, but if you are still miserable it makes sense to have a re-check. That is especially important if you have a high fever or if you have not been able to swallow well enough to get adequate liquid intake.
I have not seen much strep in the last week, and I have seen people with some fairly nasty viral sore throats, but I don't know what is circulating in your area. If it isn't strep it may be something like Adenovirus or Coxsackievirus which can cause fairly severe sore throat. Both of those are circulating now in my area. Antibiotics won't help those but there are some things that may reduce the symptoms.

just went to doctor
by watto star / September 12, 2008 12:57 PM PDT

Yeah well i just went back to the doctor, and the session was really quick I told him about my throat and he just shined a light at my throat and looked at it. I dont think its anithing serious, but he gave my anitbiotics and said that i have a viral infection and theres no actual cure for it, but it takes about 2-4 weeks for you to come right, and he game me some antiboitics, I feel alot better today, because of the painkillers but i will know for sure tomorrow if the antibiotics will work. He diddnt scan me or anything so i suggest he thinks its just something and nothing, so im putting on a smile and if in no better in a few weeks Im going to see my throat and nose and ear specialist, but otherwise, im kinds better,

thanks guys, and wish me luck!

if you are 100% sure its supposed to be viral and 100% sure its antibiotics..
stop them.. they wont help at all.

antiobiotics only work on bacteria and not of virus's

Could be.
by Kees Bakker / September 12, 2008 7:25 PM PDT

Or just as well, it could be a bacterium. The doctor makes a educated guess, based on the symptoms, how it looks, how it feels and what he currently sees in his other patients. Only the lab can tell for sure.

"theres no actual cure for it" <<<< From your post. Amazing all the wonders of modern medicine and they can do nothing against this primitive micro creature perhaps someday there will be a cure.
