Updating the firmware has caused some issues with some players. If you do update with the thumbdrive, you need to launch the downloaded file and install the update ONTO the thumbdrive.
If it doesn't work, you might want to exchange the player, and at that point, do what makes you happiest.

The very first Bluray I tried to play, Gran Torino (Netflix) produced the "Can't play this disk" message. The disk was new and clean.
I googled the issue and found that the BD-3600 can't play certain disks and needs a firmware update. I downloaded the firmware (.RUF) on to a flash drive and it will not read it. Did the same thing after burning onto a CD. Can't log onto my wireless network using the password!
BUT, cnet forum has a thread about the 1.03 firmware having a bug in it (see prior forums) and you can't use the player after updating. So, probably shouldn't update???
Maybe just buy a different brand...
