Overheating Problem-What Fan?

Dec 2, 2003 2:47AM PST

After reading through other topics on these forums, i'm convinced that my pc is overheating when running games. Only problem is I don't know what type of fan I need to buy to fix it!

My PC is 2.4Ghz Intel Pentium 4, 80Gb Hard Drive, 256MB DDR, NVidia GeForce 4MX 440.

From reading the similar topics it seems likely that the video card is overheating. do i need a specific type of fan to match my video card?? or OS?

cheers
Andy

Video card fans are very particular in size and such.

You can talk to the nice people at http://www.1coolpc.com if you feel like it.

Possibly adding a case fan or two [80 mm] to bring more cool air in

and exhaust more hot air. Then the fan on the video card would be working with cooler air.

Of course, open the case and make certain that the fans or heat sinks are not clogged with dust.

Fan placement is important- you don't want them working at cross purposes; try to have the air flow all 1 way, and tie up any loose cables/wiring. I have a pci fan that helps exhaust heat pretty well; mebbe the link Bob gave you sells them. But it may be time for a new card; an MMX isn't really a G4, but a G2,so it wont handle demanding games (hence the heat.) Head over to http://www.newegg.com for a look at video cards and user reviews. You may find an affordable upgrade. I always look for a card with a giganto fan, but keep in mind the innards of your system; some fans wont fit into the agp slot depending on whatever else you may have inside. Good luck.

Most recent video cards use a fan and a "low-rise" one at that or simply not as tall as others. You can install a 2ndary fan next to it to better handle extra heat build-up to immediately route to outside of case. If you check various overclocker or modding websites you'll get a feel for what's out there plus hints/tips to better handle that extra heat. You're going to find also "water cooling" kits too so if you polan t get the upmost from your system its a worthy investment but pick a decent one, check reviews.
