Over-riding auto correct

Apr 30, 2007 5:17PM PDT

I have MS Word XP, and have configured it to auto-correct the initial lowercase letter of the first word in a sentence to a capital letter. However, I sometimes have no need for this auto-correct. How do I over-ride this function, beside going to the letter and reverse the auto-correction manually ? I would think the pressing of a combination of two keys, for example, would be the solution. What are they, if any ? Thanks.

Grammar

Hi christy.

I can't think of a case where, grammatically, I would not want a capital letter at the start of a new sentence.

If the previous sentence ends in a full stop, or if the sentence in question is the start of a new paragraph, then it is proper for a capital letter to be used. You can use the semi-colon; eg just now I used the semi-colon and continued with a letter with small case, and Word would accept that.

If you need to use small letters for visual purposes, eg where grammar is not the over-riding consideration, then I can only suggest turning off Auto-correct completely, or leaving it on and manually changing the letter back to small case once the word has been typed.

Re over-riding auto correct.

Thanks, Mark. I knew I would get such a response, so let me explain.

Sometimes, I need to start a sentence with an e-mail address, or just type in an e-mail address or URL in a table cell. Since almost all e-mail addresses and URLs start with a lower case letter,... do you see the problem ? Thanks.

Ahh. yes I see what you mean

In that case, unless other people here have better ideas, I think your only option is to disable Auto-correct whilst you are typing the email addresses or url.

I imagine you could create a macro, (and place a macro button on the toolbar), that one clicks to remove the Auto-correct, and another that one clicks to re-enable it.

I'm not sure what other options there are.

...for suggesting a macro. I do not know VBA , but it would be easy recording a macro. As I have mentioned, it is possible to just delete the corrected letter and replace it with the original, but a macro sure help things when there are lots of them e-mails and URLs.

Immediately press Ctrl-Z

Whenever you see Auto-correct, or any auto function of Word, make a change for you (such as you just typed "teh" and you really want that and not "the" which auto-correct replaces for you) just immediately press Ctrl-Z. That will undo that auto-correct action.

Thanks.
