over ride iPad auto capitalize ???

this is probably answered somewhere in the IOS5 manual, but I can't find it. How to I get the iPad to make the first letter of a sentence lower case? Holding down the shift key doesn't work, only going into settings and turning auto cap off does. But I just want to do it once. (why? because I tried to sign on to a hotel wifi which requires an all lowercase user ID and nothing - even creating a keyboard shortcut with a lowercase text - would work). I fixed the problem as noted above, but this is ridiculous!
